A BBC Press release reports that after the next season of Doctor Who (2008) the next regular series (five) will return in 2010. There will be in the meantime a 2008 Christmas special and three other specials in 2009 starring David Tennant.

According to the DW newsgroup that I'm on, after they did some digging, they list what they call a few facts of interest:

"The BBC plan to switch to High Definition in 2009. The majority of programs made before the switch, including Doctor Who, are not being made in HD. This allows for the Doctor Who production crew to prepare for the switch. If the BBC did broadcast Doctor Who in 2009, it would not be HD, and therefore the quality of the program would look poor.

It is clear that Russel T Davies would like to take a break from Doctor Who. It is a gruelling nine month shoot, and all the cast and crew spend practically all that time in Cardiff, effectively living there on a permanent basis. RTD has been in Cardiff since 2004; effectively he has been there for almost four years. I think he needs the break and time off to do something else.

This also gives David Tennant the chance to take time off to pursue other projects, while tying him to the role for another series."

In other DW news, DW has won the Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation, Short Form for The Girl in the Fireplace written by Steven Moffat and directed by Euros Lyn. Runners up included the two part Army of Ghosts/Doomsday and School Reunion. A full list of the other winners can be found at the Hugo Awards website.  Steven Moffat won the same award last year for the DW episode The Empty Child and according to Neil Gaiman will win next year for the DW episode Blink.
